High Efficiency Toilets

Many Bay Area water utilities offer rebates of up to $200 to residential customers and up to $300 to commercial customers who purchase new qualifying water efficient toilet models. Other utilities may offer a FREE turn-key direct installation program for high-efficiency toilets.

With toilets accounting for about one-third water used inside the home, replacing older, high water-use toilets with high-efficiency models is one of the best ways to save water.

In 1994, federal law mandated that the toilet flush volume for models sold in the United States could not exceed 1.6 gallons per flush. Prior to this standard, toilets flushed at 3.5 to 7 gallons per flush. Some of these water-guzzling toilets are still found in homes and businesses today!

The "new" technology in toilets is the High-Efficiency Toilet (HET), which flushes at least 20% below the standard 1.6 gallons per flush model. These new models are readily available at retail outlets and can help achieve significant water savings.

Don't know the flush volume of your toilet? Lift the tank lid and check the inside back of the toilet tank for the manufacturer’s date. Any date before 1994 does not meet the current Federal standard of 1.6 gallons per flush and should be replaced.

Clothes Washing Machines

Bay Area water utilities offer rebates of up to $200 to residential customers and up to $400 to commercial customers who purchase new qualifying high-efficiency clothes washer models.

Clothes washing machines account for more than 20% of water used inside the home. Running a conventional washing machine can use more than 50 gallons of water per cycle.

Today, new technology is emerging to replace water guzzling clothes washers with high-efficiency models that use 40% less water and energy. These new washers are readily available in retail outlets and are one of the most effective ways to reduce your water usage.

High-efficiency washers have been shown to provide equal if not improved performance compared to high-volume washers. Many high-efficiency washers are front-loading configurations which use less water and detergent than traditional vertical access models by tumbling clothes in a small pool of water. Using less water in the wash cycle requires up to 50% less energy needed to heat the water and faster spin cycles mean more water is extracted from clothes - thus reducing the amount of time required in the dryer.
